Crochet Bear Pattern



Materials:

  • Worsted weight yarn in the following colors:
    • Brown (for the bear's body)
    • Red (for the hat)
    • Blue (for the coat)
    • Yellow (for the coat toggles)
    • Black (for the nose and mouth)
  • 3.5mm (E) crochet hook
  • Safety eyes (10-12mm)
  • Fiberfill stuffing
  • Yarn needle
  • Stitch marker
  • Scissors

Abbreviations:

  • ch: chain
  • sc: single crochet
  • inc: increase (2 sc in the next stitch)
  • dec: decrease (sc 2 stitches together)
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • st: stitch
  • rnd: round

Gauge:

  • Not critical for this project, but keep stitches tight to prevent stuffing from showing.

Head:

Using brown yarn:

  1. Rnd 1: 6 sc in a magic ring. (6)
  2. Rnd 2: inc around. (12)
  3. Rnd 3: sc, inc around. (18)
  4. Rnd 4: 2 sc, inc around. (24)
  5. Rnd 5: 3 sc, inc around. (30)
  6. Rnd 6: 4 sc, inc around. (36)
  7. Rnds 7-12: sc around. (36)
  8. Rnd 13: 4 sc, dec around. (30)
  9. Rnd 14: 3 sc, dec around. (24)
  10. Rnd 15: 2 sc, dec around. (18)

Insert safety eyes between Rnds 10 and 11, about 6 stitches apart.

Stuff firmly.

Body:

Using brown yarn:

  5. Rnd 5: 3 sc, inc around. (30)

  9. Rnd 15: sc, dec around. (12)
  10. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Arms (Make 2):

Using brown yarn:

  2. Rnd 2: inc around. (12)
  3. Rnds 3-8: sc around. (12)
  4. Rnd 9: sc, dec around. (8)
  5. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Stuff lightly.

Legs (Make 2):

Using brown yarn:

  1. Rnd 1: 6 sc in a magic ring. (6)
  2. Rnd 2: inc around. (12)
  3. Rnd 3: sc, inc around. (18)
  4. Rnds 4-10: sc around. (18)
  5. Rnd 11: sc, dec around. (12)
  6. Rnd 12: dec around. (6)
  7. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Stuff firmly.

Ears (Make 2):

Using brown yarn:

  1. Rnd 1: 6 sc in a magic ring. (6)
  2. Rnd 2: sc, inc around. (9)
  3. Rnd 3: 2 sc, inc around. (12)
  4. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Do not stuff.

Muzzle:

Using white yarn:

  1. Rnd 1: 6 sc in a magic ring. (6)
  2. Rnd 2: inc around. (12)
  3. Rnd 3: sc, inc around. (18)
  4. Rnd 4: sc around. (18)
  5. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Stuff lightly and sew onto the lower part of the head.

Nose:

Using black yarn:

  1. Rnd 1: 6 sc in a magic ring. (6)
  2. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Sew the nose onto the center of the muzzle.

Coat:

Using blue yarn:

  1. Ch enough stitches to wrap around the bear's body. Join with a sl st to form a ring.
  2. Rnd 1: sc around.
  3. Continue working in rnds until the coat reaches the desired length.
  4. Create armholes by skipping a few stitches and chaining the same number. Continue working in rnds until the coat reaches the desired length.
  5. Fasten off.

For the toggles, use yellow yarn:

  1. Ch 8, sl st in the 2nd ch from the hook and in each remaining ch.
  2. Fasten off and sew onto the front of the coat.

Hat:

Using red yarn:

  1. Rnd 1: 6 sc in a magic ring. (6)
  2. Rnd 2: inc around. (12)
  3. Rnd 3: sc, inc around. (18)
  4. Continue increasing until the hat fits the bear's head comfortably.
  5. Rnds 5-10: sc around.
  6. For the brim, switch to blue yarn:
    • sc, inc around.
    • sc around.
  7. Fasten off.

Assembly:

  1. Sew the head to the body.
  2. Sew the arms and legs in place.
  3. Attach the ears to the top of the head.
  4. Dress the bear in the coat and hat.
  5. Weave in all ends.
